On July 8, the Humane Society of the U.S. got another chance to do what it does best – mobilize its resources to rescue animals and improve their chances for the good life. Kimi Peck of Tehachapi, California had started a Chihuahua rescue organization that got out of hand. She contacted HSUS because she was being evicted from her property and could no longer care for the animals.
HSUS personnel arrived on the scene with two mobile sheltering vehicles, ready to evaluate the situation and move the animals to another location. They found the dogs living in overcrowded conditions, but they were not starving or abused. Evidently the woman was doing her best to care for the animals, but she had taken in too many and simply could not provide them with personal attention and care.
“I am voluntarily relinquishing my own animals with the understanding that they will all go to the Humane Society and not one will be euthanized,” Peck is quoted as saying. The HSUS call was made after a long series of run-ins with local animal control and land use authorities that finally culminated in the eviction.
The property in question is owned by Beverly Hills CPA Susan Marlow, whose previous tenant was accused animal abuser and hoarder Cynthia Gudger. Gudger was arrested in 2008 on felony animal cruelty charges and currently resides in a state mental institution. Marlow has known Peck for 10 years and calls her “an angel” for taking in so many abandoned animals. Because of land use conflicts and escalating fines, however, she felt she had no choice but to evict her tenant and the animals.
HSUS, in collaboration with Kern County Animal Control, rescued almost 150 dogs that day, plus assorted cats, rabbits, and chickens. The dogs were transported to a temporary shelter set up at the Kern County Fairgrounds, where they received proper vet check-ups, vaccinations, and other urgent medical services. The dogs were later transferred to the Sacramento SPCA, where they will soon be available for adoption.
