Editor’s Wag – June 2013

Just in time for summer, Bay Woof is pleased to present a plethora of canine good news stories appropriate to the season.

We start  with Andrea Moss’s inside take on how one breed rescue organization, NorCal Collie Rescue, evolved from its shoestring beginnings into a model of success. Occasionally a hoarder bust or a breeder shut-down will result in “raining Collies,” but most of the time NCR is able to maintain a waiting list of potential adopters. We can’t wait for the day when every rescue group is in the same enviable position.

In this month’s Good Dog! column, Bay Woof regular Chad Culp walks us down three paths toward better canine citizenship. A side benefit of socialization? Well-socialized dogs make great travel companions (see below for more on dog-friendly travel).

Kelly Gorman Dunbar’s Monthly Woof reminds us that our dogs never outgrow the need to be rewarded for good behavior. Appreciation and reinforcement go a long way, whether we stand on two legs or four.

From a dog’s perspective, one of the few negatives to the summer season can be an increase in itching and scratching. If your vet has confirmed that fleas are not to blame for these behaviors, allergies may be the culprit. In our Ask Dr. Dog column, Pet Nutritionist Susan Blake Davis and Holistic Veterinarian David A. Gordon offer a holistic 4-step approach to finding long-term solutions to food and environmental allergies.

We’re excited to present a first-hand account of this year’s Canine Science Symposium, staged in March by Pawsitive Tails. Self-proclaimed “dog nerd” Natalia Martinez shares the latest from the experts in canine behavior and cognition. Myths were overturned, new territory was explored, and dog nerds everywhere can look forward to more fresh insights as this field of research continues to grow.

The Bay Area is full of creative people trying new ways to make the world a better place. This month we honor some of the best among them: the wonderful folks at Berkeley’s PAW FUND, who hit the streets to offer preventative health care to pets whose people can’t always afford veterinary services. You’ll be touched by PAW FUND founder Jill Posener’s story and her on-the-street photos of PAW FUND in action.

We have another great article for you this month: a behind-the-scenes account of the first-ever media tour designed specifically for the dog travel industry. Bay Woof’s Managing Editor (that would be me!) was fortunate to be on board for this adventure. Six journalists with pooches in tow were wined and dined (quite literally) by a choice selection of the many dog-friendly hotels, restaurants, businesses, and other attractions in beautiful San Luis Obispo County on the Central California coast. All of us – the journalists, the Visit San Luis Obispo tourism office and their team, and the local businesses – came away from the event wildly encouraged about the growing potential of the dog travel industry. Jeanne Sullivan’s inside scoop is here.

Maddie’s® Pet Adoption Days on June 1-2 – the nation’s biggest free adoption event – highlights this month’s Shelter Zone column. Brigid Wasson, Animal Shelter Supervisor for Santa Clara County, explains how six animal agencies in the county formed the WeCARE (Community Alliance to Reduce Euthanasia) coalition, with the support of Maddie’s Fund. The annual adoption event demonstrates how collaboration between shelters can save lives.

Make sure to watch for the July issue of Bay Woof, when we’ll celebrate dogs at work and the many contributions made by our canine partners. Till then, grab a pup and go have some summer fun!
