It’s hard for us to believe that we just passed the five year mark. Last month’s issue was our fourth annual Beast of the Bay Awards and our fifth anniversary issue of Bay Woof. You could knock us over with a Kong.
We doubt you’ve recently heard anyone say this was a great time to go into publishing. But you know what? For us, it has been. The people we’ve met in the Northern California animal advocacy world have been amazing — great leaders, great teachers, and great dog lifesavers. We are humbled by the kind of work accomplished by these good souls who fight for the lives of those who cannot speak for themselves.
We started out wanting to foster the relationship between human and canine, the four-legged fur-balls with whom we’ve found the true meaning of love and kindness, patience and forgiveness; what we’ve found in the process is a growing number of people opening their homes to rescued animals — people who have chosen to adopt rather than purchase new family members — and truly making them Family members. Caring for the hairy beasts in “mundane” daily life — sheltering and comforting them, feeding them quality food and snacks, providing exercise and mental stimulation — are things that bring exponential rewards to the human heart. Anyone who has ever brought home a scared little creature — possibly abused and surely neglected — knows that the love they add to one’s life is rarely quantifiable. Thank you for all that you do to care for the four- (three-, two- and no-) legged animals who bring nothing but goodness into the lives of us humans, and who ask for nothing but an occasional scratch behind the ears. Our gratitude for being able to make this paper and celebrate the love between Canis lupus familiaris and Homo sapien increases every day.
And thank you for all the inspirations and support.
Speaking of Carpe Diem, this (our annual travel issue) month is all about keeping that tail-waggin’ pal of yours with you when you travel. Holly Fogleboch took the top four “Best Dog-Friendly Accommodations” category nominees from our recent readers’ poll and wrote a summary of why our readers thought they were the woof about town. Gail Green chats about local day trips with the pooch in “If My Dog Could Drive …” , and we feature an excerpt from Trailhead, a book about hiking with your dog by Ellen Eastwood. If you’re a bibliophile, you’ll be sure to enjoy Holly’s returning BookHound column.
