It is with great pleasure that I take the leash from Mindy Toomay, as the Content Editor for Bay Woof. As one of the last remaining print sources in the Bay Area, Bay Woof continues to offer a wonderful resource to dog lovers all around the Bay, and I’m thrilled to contribute. This has been a great month for me, collecting articles and stories to share with you in our April Issue. Before we begin, let’s give a big tail wag to Mindy who has edited the paper from the beginning. Her friendly voice and fantastic editing will be missed. As everyone’s favorite Vulcan would say, Live Long and Prosper, Mindy!
Have dog will travel! One of my sweetest memories from childhood is the hot backseat of my parent’s Saab. Picture me, the youngest, sandwiched between my sister on one side and my brother on the other, but the experience would not be complete without our beloved, panting, fluffy, Australian Shepherd, Wilbur stretched across our laps. Before my parents upgraded to a station wagon, there were a few months where the backseat was a hot, furry, sun-soaked place for all four “kids.” I loved it. Wilbur was soft and cuddly, and I delighted in stroking his ears as we skimmed along the highway. Travel with dogs is a special treat, and this month we take you along on a variety of stories about life’s journey, whether it be to Mendocino or into old age.
Let’s start with the basics. We are thrilled to share Ian Murphy’s Tips and Tricks for Hitting the Road. His list of reminders will help you prepare for a fantastic trip with your pup wherever you are going.
Not sure where to take yourself and your canine companion? Elizabeth Xu and Brigid Wasson have great ideas about two wonderful California destinations. Whether you want to climb up to the mountains or ride along the coast, you’ve got options. Elizabeth knows Tahoe for dogs and shares some great insider tips for summer time fun at the slopes. Brigid’s Shelter Zone invites you to ride up Highway One and find yourself in Mendocino. Whether you are a fan of oceanside cliffs, hiking with Fido, or pet-friendly hotels, you will love the north coast. These two articles are sure to inspire you to get in the car.
There are so many ways to travel with your dog. Lisa Katayama’s lyrical article about her tiny dog, Ruby gives us new insights into puppy bags! Lisa and Ruby travelled the world, seeing cities and sites from Tokyo to Manhattan through the mesh of a puppy carrier. Read Lisa’s gentle tribute to Ruby and her explanation of how Ruby taught her next dog, Malcolm the best ways to travel.
Meanwhile, Mike Minnick’s article, Dreams Are Like Sticks, gives us a whole different approach to life on the road. Mike and Bixby have been long distance biking together for almost three years, gathering fans and fun all across the US. Bixby and Mike are on a mission to spread the word about the power of shelter dogs and rescue.
If traveling is not on your calendar this month, there are so many ways to get off the couch and get involved in our dog community. Larry Moskovitz’ article, Certified Pet Therapy Opens Hearts, offers a great way to meet other dog lovers and to facilitate a loving connection between dogs and humans. The services at Share-A-Pet traverse many stages of life, from reading with young struggling readers to soothing elders who are ailing.
It’s been a fun ride finding all these stories for our April edition. Next month we’ll feature stories about dogs and the arts. Drop us a line if you’ve got a great story to tell.
