February, the Month of Love. At the Bay Woof office, when the dogs are around, it’s always the love-month. We’re happy to bring you an issue full of it – love, that is. From the cover photograph of Ceiba Love through “A Girl and her Dog: A Love Story”, we’re all about the love this month.
Love knows no bounds, not even a horrid economy, as our local shelter and rescue communities well know. Their tireless efforts to save animals and find them new forever homes continues through dark of night and budget cut-backs. We asked them for love notes to their favorite rescues from last year and on our center spread we highlight their Valentines to successful adoptions.
We’re lucky to live in an area so full of love, especially for the art of the Canine. Colten Tognamino of Dogged Pursuit Photography shares some secrets of the trade so that you can try your hand at taking a great shot. After all, no dog is as stunningly gorgeous as your dog, right?
San Francisco is a leader in many areas, and regulating the growing dog-walking industry is only one of the reasons why being a dog lover and living in the city is a good thing. Cathy Chen-Rennie shares the news related to recent changes in dog walker legislation.
In the greater SF Bay Area, new dog parks are cropping up all over the place. Holly Fogleboch, Bay Woof Editorial Assistant, surveys the new play areas in this month’s Rover Report.
This month’s Shelter Zone comes from Berkeley-East Bay Humane Society’s Program Director, Sara Kersey, who tells how the recovery from last year’s fire hasn’t deterred their efforts to save dogs (and other animals, of course).
Dr. Jenny from Creature Comforts in Oakland provides the Ask Dr. Dog column, which is all about canine acupuncture.
The monthly training column, Good Dog!, was sent to us from Lisa Gunter of Pawsitive Tails in San Francisco, addresses divas and drama queens in a canine package. We bet all of you have met one or two of those in the past – Lisa talks about how to deal with them.
This month we’re proud to debut a new mini-column, Mr Smarty Pants, who will provide entertaining pooch facts to share and tweet so that you’ll at least seem like an expert at your next party. Rounding out the issue is our ever-popular Dr Ian Dunbar’s Monthly Woof, Nose for News, and Calendar of Events.
And speaking of events, be sure to save the date for the party we’re throwing on March 10 at El Rio in San Francisco. We‘ll be celebrating all the nominees and winners of The Fourth Annual Beast of the Bay Awards, our annual readers’ poll where YOU get to nominate and vote for your favorites in each of over 40 categories of canine-centric people, places and things. Our online ballot can be found here. Final voting is in full swing until midnight on February 10 — one ballot per IP address, please. (Ballot stuffers will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.) Look for the announcement of winners in the March issue of Bay Woof.
Did you know that every month Bay Woof features articles by local professionals in the field of Canine health, training, and rescue? It’s true. If you’re working in the field of Canine advocacy in the greater San Francisco Bay Area and have something to say, let us know – we’d love to include you in months to come.
Please remember to support our advertisers – let them know you saw them in our pages so they’ll know how smart they are to advertise with us!
You, dear reader, are our Valentine – thanks for reading. Woof!
