Love is the true purpose of existence, whether it’s Valentines Day or any day of the year. Dogs emanate love like beacons in the night, effortlessly shining on us without conditions or expectations. If human love were as grand as that of a dog’s, we daresay there’d be much more peace in the world. So, in this Valentine edition of Bay Woof, we celebrate that four-letter word that bonds us to them forever more.
If you’re planning to take your hairiest pal on a special excursion for the Day-of-Hearts and you want them spruced up to match your own high shine, you might want to check out Puppy’s First Grooming for some great tips for the blow-dry-uninitiated.
Need some help writing that love-letter to Bowser? We’ve pulled some notable quotes about love and canines, and Mim Carlson, Executive Director of Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter, shares Lessons on Love I Learned from a Dog. We received a couple of great letters this month and you can read them starting on page 4 (of the paper), but more importantly, send us some more!
Good Dog! by Cynthia Edgerly is about Banishing Boredom, and Dr. John Huebner of Redwood Veterinary Hospital contributed Ask Dr. Dog this month, all about Choosing Healthy Food for Rex.
Editor Mindy Toomay, partner of the late great Herb Canine, gathered some of her favorite Valentine-themed quips of his and they’re here.
And speaking of our dear Mindy – Editor in Chief, Manager of All Things Written, Faithful Sounding Board and Most Illustrious Bay Woof Friend & Colleague since the pre-dawn of this humble rag – as of this month she’ll be re-arranging her life to make room to explore some other worthwhile endeavors. I must say that without her this paper never would have left the ground. Her cheerful tone and expert skill in the written word gave Bay Woof its voice, one that has carried us though six years of publishing despite skimpy (and sometimes tardy) paychecks. Happily for us, she’ll continue to make time to edit contributors’ work and to lend a pen for the occasional story. Thank you, Mindy, for all you’ve done to help us speak with honesty, integrity, and love for The Dog. We love you and will miss you terribly in the daily life of the Bay Woof virtual office.
The fabulous Deb Hirsh, whose work has been gracing our pages for many months, is stepping up to recruit writers and to manage Bay Woof’s story list, in this next chapter of Bay Woof’s growth and development.
In early February we’ll be tabulating the winners from the thousands of ballots entered in our Fifth Annual Beast of the Bay Awards – hopefully you had a chance to vote for your favorite dog-friendly people places and things before the ballot closed on January 31. The results will be announced in the March issue. Please bring your friends (including well-behaved canine pals) and join us to celebrate the winners, honorable mentions, and our thriving dog-loving community – mark your calendar for the Beast of the Bay Awards Party on Saturday, April 13. The raffle proceeds and a portion of the door will be donated to the winner of the Best Rescue Organization. Keep your ears and eyes peeled for more details about the shin-dig to come.
