Bay Woof was born two years ago this month, and puppyhood has been fantastic. Our mission month-by-month is to help you celebrate the joys and navigate the challenges of a dog-centric life, and according to your feedback, we do a pretty good job of it.
We’ve received the steadfast support of advertisers, contributors, and readers, and feel deeply grateful to the dog lovers (and dogs!) of the Bay Area for our success. In case you were wondering, we intend to be around for many years to come, keeping the well-being of canines always in mind (and in print).
Extra special thanks this month to all of you who took the time to vote in our first annual Beast of the Bay Awards, letting us know your favorite dog-friendly people and places. We received almost 2,500 ballots, and our final voting party on January 31 at Stray Bar was a blast. Now it’s finally time to announce the winners. Drumroll, please…
The rest of this issue is dedicated to the love of dogs in myriad forms. Helping her adopted dog heal from serious physical and emotional trauma became Maureen Burkley’s passion and led her to a new life purpose. As a veterinarian, Nancy Kay certainly knows a thing or two about healing. She wants vet visits to be stress-free for dogs and people, and she offers her ten commandments for making it so.
Mary Giuffrida of the Berkeley East Bay Humane Society has been in the business of saving dogs for a long while, and even she is shocked by the plight of pets who become innocent victims when people lose their homes to foreclosure. Brace yourself for her article. Toni Lee Hage has written a Good Dog! column that will increase the peace between people and their pooches by improving reliable recall in any situation.
Looking ahead a bit, April is time for our annual travel issue. With so many of us pinching pennies at the moment, we decided to focus on close to home Fido-friendly getaways. Delightful day trips abound in our neck of the woods, so be sure to tune in next month.
