WAG: From the Editor's Desk

Nasty rumor has it that dogs are hard on a house and yard, that they chew, dig, dirty, and generally destroy real estate. Bay Area attorney and landlord Elaine Lee’s response to such assumptions would be, “No way!”

In her article, she explains why renting exclusively to tenants with dogs has been both personally and financially rewarding. She offers a complete how-to for property owners who want to follow in her footsteps, and we hope many will.

I never thought we’d be offering you words of wisdom straight from conservative pundit and author Ben Stein, but when he waxed ecstatic on CBS News Sunday Morning about how dogs can save our lives, we had to listen. Read what he said about “the divinity of dogs.”

Kari Ann Owen last appeared in our pages with a story about life with her cherished service dog, Beethoven. Beethoven has since passed away and now Cassie Rainbow, a three-year-old Golden Retriever, is trying to fill his paw prints. Read “Letter to a Service Dog in Heaven” to see how it’s going.

A dog’s quality-of-life quotient is based on good health, same as a person’s, and this doesn’t just mean freedom from disease. True well-being depends on vibrant and consistent energy, strong immunity to pathogens, flexibility and balance in our movement, and freedom from aches and pains. It is in these vital areas that holistic therapies can make a huge difference. Veronica Boutelle discusses three “complementary” canine treatment modalities in her article: acupuncture, reiki, and water therapy. Shelah Barr explains why massage should be a part of Bowser’s feel-great regimen. And for one progressive veterinarian’s insights into holistic health for dogs, don’t miss Doug Knueven’s Dr. Dog column.

Lots of newspapers have been biting the dust (oh, Chronicle, how we miss your old self!), and some readers have inquired recently about the state of Bay Woof’s health. Thanks for your concern and well wishes, but not to worry. I’m happy to report that the paper is thriving. Still, if you want to make sure we remain on the scene for a long time to come, make a point of supporting our advertisers. That’s the way it works, in both good and bad economic times. Dog-loving businesses buy advertising in our paper, allowing us to provide you with useful and enjoyable content, and you read the ads and support those businesses. Thanks for being part of this positive – and essential – feedback loop.

Here’s something new we’re excited about: Bay Woof has become a sponsor of KOFY Companion Dog Adoptions, a popular show on the Bay Area’s most dog-friendly TV channel, KOFY-TV20 (Cable 13). The program offers meaningful information on training, health, and other canine topics, as well as featuring adoptable dogs from local animal shelters. Tune in and soak up the canine community vibe.

Enjoy the beautiful month of May, and let us know what’s on your mind these days when it comes to the dog-loving life. We’re always eager to hear from readers at editor@baywoof.com.
