WAG: From the Editor's Desk

With Thanksgiving on the near horizon and grim economic news at every turn, I’ve been practicing gratitude. When anger, frustration, and mortal dread seem like sensible reactions to world events, counting my blessings keeps me sane. And when I make lists of the best things in my life – good friends, good health, good job – dogs always leap to mind.

This month, let’s find new ways to express appreciation for all the love and loyalty they provide. If your own canine companions are young and social, schedule extra visits to the local dog park and/or treat them to doggie day care. If they’re old and hobbling, create cozy beds for them by the fire. Upgrade their diets or take up a canine sport to make sure they stay physically and mentally fit.

(Remember, though, that food does not equal love. When the Thanksgiving feast is laid out on the table, resist the temptation to feed your fur people buttery spuds and gravy or turkey skin. Lean meat and plain veggies are yummy treats that won’t cause potentially serious digestive distress.)

Did you notice I’ve been using plural pronouns here? That’s because Kelli Danielson’s article on multi-dog households has gotten to me. Don’t miss her advice on adding new members to your personal pack and making sure they all get along. Sometimes, of course, one is enough. Kathy Cordova’s essay on how walking her dog, Dog, helps keep her grounded and grateful is all about the joys of one special pooch.

For an inspiring story about just how grounding a dog’s companionship can be, read “Pen Pals of San Quentin.” Turns out inmates and shelter dogs can make a big difference in each other’s lives.

If you have a new pup, Nancy Weller’s advice about housetraining might be just what you’re looking for. Ian Dunbar’s Monthly Woof column offers a lot more great ideas for living well with a new puppy.

Herb Canine provides abundant grins, as usual, but there is big news on the Bay Woof humor front. The incomparable Linda Barry has granted us permission to reprint her dog toons – for which we are incredibly grateful.

How could I end this column without mentioning the elections? There are lots of local races and initiatives to care about, but all eyes these days are mostly focused on the presidential race. Which of the candidates would do the most good for animals, as well as people? The Humane Society of the United States has never before endorsed a candidate for president, but Obama gets their nod this time out. Find out why.

And finally, while you’re in the voting frame of mind, cast your ballot for our Beast of the Bay Awards. We look forward to publishing your picks!
