Food – what a complex and important topic. Feeding ourselves healthy, nutritious, delicious meals is a task in and of itself, so keeping our family members and our dogs in great nutritional shape can be daunting. This month we bring you a wide variety of food options, ideas, and considerations as you feed Fido.

Are you in tune with your dog’s dietary need and resulting health? It’s a challenge, isn’t it? I often think about what a tough job veterinarians have given given that our pups can’t talk to tell us where they hurt, how things happened, or what they need. Feeding our animals put us in a similar position. Does Fido like this week’s choices? Why isn’t Rover finishing his food the way he used to? Is Snowy dehydrated in this heat. We have to do some guesswork and research to “read” the signs from our pups.  Vets face this challenge every day, but vets train for years to read the signs! Luckily, we live with our animals, so we have lots of opportunities to observe their behavior, their mood changes, and their health – but creating a sustainable, delicious dietary plan still involves experimentation and trial and error, especially for those of us who struggle to find time to feed ourselves well. We often fall into habitual behaviors around food and feeding (for both our own meals and those of our families). SO – what can we do?  This issue of Bay Woof offers lots of ideas to try.

It all starts with the source, Annie Tahtinen and her scruff-head, Millie, offer us a great place to begin – with our local, trustworthy pet food store. Annie and Millie have created a profound connection to their local pet provider, so that’s where they go with questions, thoughts, and projects for keeping Millie healthy. Another great place to start is with meal planning and experimentation. Monica Fiorenti and Dr. Adam Piaseczny share a great Q and A session regarding what to feed our dogs and how to get started with creating dog food at home. Follow that dish up with Kasie Maxwell’s informative piece on feeding your Senior Dog, and your expertise will grow! We’ve also included a few delicious food for dogs recipes provided by Kris Rotonda of the Cooking Network on YouTube. Finally, we all know that some days shopping, preparing, and cooking food at home is just too much, so we’ve got a solution for you. Dining Out! We’ve featured a restaurant and a winery that would love to see you and your furry friend on their threshold. Enjoy it all with a cold glass of lemonade or a summertime brew. Next month we’ll tackle Health and Wellness from a variety of angles. Stay cool as San Francisco’s September Summer approaches.
