There is one so-called dog “sport” that all of us at Bay Woof roundly condemn, and that’s the shameful spectacle of dog fighting. Fortunately, a federal bill signed into law in May aims at wiping out dog fighting, cockfighting, and other forms of animal fighting across the country.
The Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act, which passed through Congress with strong bipartisan support, provides more powerful tools to law enforcement agencies for cracking down on these illegal and morally reprehensible activities.
Many animal welfare organizations joined the lobbying effort, including the United States Humane Society, which called such activities “organized animal cruelty.”
The law makes it a felony to engage in interstate commerce related to animal fighting activities. Major breeders of fighting animals serve a nationwide, and even international, clientele, so this aspect of the law should prove effective in slashing their profits. Each violation carries a penalty of up to three years in jail and a fine of up to $250,000.
The law took effect immediately upon signing.
