Creating portraits of dogs in mosaic began as a perfect segue between my previous career in Boston as dog groomer/salon proprietor and my present day career as a Bay Area mosaic artist.
Based on a photo, each portrait is a whimsical likeness made with ceramic, glass, and found objects. Influences include an absolute love and admiration for dogs, and the desire to honor them with quirky originality.
My favorite portrait projects are the ones where I know the subject. I get a warm and fuzzy feeling as I recreate her or him into a permanent art piece. My goal is to choose colors and textures that really bring out the aura and personality of each dog. Angel’s tranquility (below), along with her funk, comes through in her portrait. Petunia (above) is a work of my imagination, my dream dog that could come along with me everywhere: a tiny, adorable, mixed-breed rescue.
In addition to dog portraits, I do cats and occasional humans. I also teach classes at various venues around the Bay Area.
