Camp Winnaribbun – your dog’s dream vacation destination – sits on the south shore of Lake Tahoe at Stateline, Nevada, elevation 6,200.
Lory Kohlmoos opened the facility in 1995 as a way to share her beloved Lake Tahoe with canines and their human friends. Every summer, on a secluded, fully fenced and gated 33-acre lakefront property with a large private beach and dock, she and her skilled staff create a paradise for dogs and dog lovers.
There are swimming, canoeing, and sunset beach walks to enjoy, but what makes Camp W special is its wide-ranging activities for and about dogs. The furry family members will relish the likes of agility, flyball, herding, and romping on the beach. Dog-themed workshops and seminars, training talks, and craft classes are available, in addition to special outdoor activities like guided hikes and kayak trips. Evening programs take place around a large campfire. Geocaching and free-style doggie dancing are popular recent additions to the line-up.
The roster of activities at Camp W will dazzle you, but don’t try to do it all. Design your days to suit yourself and your dog, but don’t forget to schedule in some simple relaxation. At this high elevation, occasional down time is recommended for dogs and people alike.
What would a vacation be without good food? Camp W’s distinctive Tahoe-Tuscan cuisine is fresh and delicious, and the fixed-menu buffet meals served in the dining hall always include a vegetarian option.
Kohlmoos is quick to point out that the camp experience isn’t a free-for-all, with off-leash dogs allowed to carouse day and night. There are rules to be followed for the safety of all. That said, however, you are not likely to find a more Fido-friendly vacation spot anywhere. Kohlmoos believes she was a dog in a former life, and everything at camp is guided by her good instincts about what dogs like best and what is best for them.
Lodging is in rustic log cabins, with shared restrooms and bathing facilities centrally located. Guests bring their own sleeping bags, linens, and towels. If you prefer more private and luxurious accommodations, the area boasts plenty of hotels, motels, and vacation homes – and your camp tuition is reduced accordingly if you sleep off-site.
South Lake Tahoe resorts are within walking distance. Nearby entertainment includes casino gaming, big-name bands and comedy acts, and golf at the renowned Edgewood Golf Course, which is directly adjacent to camp.
