Early in 1998, an email list server was opened as a way for owners of Miniature Pinschers to connect with one another.
It brought together show competitors and breeders as well as ordinary dog lovers. The list was called Saluki after the server that hosted it. That same July, someone posted a message about a six-month-old Min-Pin in Florida being crated in a garage 24/7. Neighbors had reported the neglect and a foster home was needed ASAP. The board lit up with messages and before long the dog in need, soon named Lister Orion Saluki, had found a new home.
Thus was born Internet Miniature Pinscher Services (IMPS), an online rescue and resource group that has grown to include more than 200 volunteers. The organization receives many more applications than there are adoptable dogs on offer, and it imposes strict guidelines on adoptive homes. To help keep dogs and their families together, IMPS also offers advice and direct assistance to people working with Min-Pin behavior problems. To date, 12,000 Miniature Pinschers have been served by the organization.
Since 2000, an annual Quilt Raffle has been IMPS’s biggest fundraiser. Quilt squares are made and donated by members from all over the country and a volunteer in Illinois sews them all together and finishes the quilt. This year enough squares were received to make two different quilts. Raffle tickets are on sale at www.mgbeng.com/quilt2008 until December 14. Other donated prizes will also be raffled off.
