When it comes to animal rescue, San Francisco once again leads the pack.
On May 6, the SF Board of Supervisors gave an honorary new name to one particular block in the city: Rescue Row. Now, folks wanting to adopt dogs and other pets have a “one-stop-shopping” opportunity on Alabama between 15th and 16th Streets.
The San Francisco SPCA, SF Animal Care & Control, Muttville Senior Dog Rescue, and Family Dog Rescue are all headquartered on the block, so it’s a great location for anyone looking to meet available dogs and other animals.
“When people think of pet adoption in San Francisco, we want Rescue Row to be the first destination that comes to mind,” said Dr. Jennifer Scarlett, SF SPCA co-president. “There are hundreds of animals to choose from at the four Rescue Row organizations. If you want to adopt a pet, there’s no better place!”
You and your furry companions are invited to a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on May 31. After the official launch, you can celebrate with other local animal lovers by participating in a red carpet pet parade. Dress up your dog and join the fun!
It will be a festival atmosphere, including a beer garden, food trucks, a vegetarian BBQ, and live music. The event begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 6 p.m.
The inauguration of Rescue Row coincides with Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days, an adoption extravaganza sponsored by Maddie’s Fund. Adoption fees will be waived all weekend for all animals. More than 100 Bay Area shelters will participate, including all four Rescue Row organizations, Grateful Dog Rescue, and Wonder Dog Rescue.
The stated goal is to adopt out a total 10,000 animals over the two days. Bay Woof is cheering you on!
Ed. Note: Please don’t forget about all the other rescue groups and humane organizations scattered throughout the Bay Area. They all do wonderful work on behalf of canines – and all have adoptable animals eagerly awaiting forever homes.
