The story of Daniel, the beagle who survived a gas chamber in an Alabama shelter, was widely reported around the country in October of 2011.
He had been abandoned, taken to the pound and later to the gas chamber where carbon monoxide was used to kill all inside. But when the chamber was re-opened this twenty pound beagle was still alive! He was given a reprieve after this miraculous escape and given the name Daniel, in honor of the Old Testament story of survival in the lions’ den.
The Eleventh Hour Rescue charity, a group dedicated to saving pooches from death row in high-kill shelters, placed Daniel with a family in New Jersey. Here the story takes a whole new twist – Daniel the Miracle Dog is now the face of a nation-wide campaign to ban the use of gas chambers in the 34 states where it is still legal. In Pennsylvania a bill named “Daniel’s Law” in his honor has passed through committee and is on its way to ratification in the state senate. The proposed law makes it a crime for animals to be euthanized in a carbon dioxide gas chamber.
Joe Dwyer, the animal trainer whose family adopted Daniel, says he is settling in with his new family and their pack of four other dogs. Daniel will be the poster dog not just for the quest to end gas chamber deaths but also to advocate for shelter dog adoptions. He has appeared on Anderson Cooper’s talk show as well as appearing at rallies in support of “Daniel’s Law.”
