Dogs Gone Digital

Selfies. No one can escape them. Whether it’s the duck-faced teenager riding Muni, celebrities trying to break the Internet at the Oscars, or politicians on the campaign trail, selfies permeate American pop culture. And now, with the help of one local eBook publisher, selfies have discovered a new muse: Dogs.

Local children’s eBook publisher, FarFaria, published “Dog Selfies” in late March 2015. The book is exactly what the title says it is: a collection of photos of dogs posed as if taking selfies. The text of the book consists of plays on today’s abbreviated text message lingo – LOL has turn into Laughing on Lawn and BFF is short for Best Furry Friends. The book is fun for parents, who can enjoy a good chuckle at the expense of today’s social media trends – and for kids, who now have a fun new book to read with silly characters they enjoy.

So why would anyone want to make a children’s book of dogs taking selfies?

Dogs have always been and are very likely to continue to be hits in children’s literature. This is evidenced by classics like “The Pokey Puppy” and with more modern book series like “Clifford the Big Red Dog,” who – rumor has it – is set to star in a new animated movie in 2016. FarFaria sees this trend continue with books published in their mobile app. In fact, the publication of “Dog Selfies” followed on the heels of the success of FarFaria’s other recent canine hit “Balto,” which became one of FarFaria’s most-read books during its debut month.

“We like to think of ourselves as a data-driven publisher,” says Ajay Godhwani, CEO of FarFaria. “When we that see a particular character or book is popular among our readers, we use that information to bring kids more of what they want. It’s just one of the ways we work to get kids reading more and enjoying it!”

Last year when National Geographic launched their animal selfies ad campaign, the world was ready. #Petselfie and apps like Snapcat, that allow pets to take pictures of themselves, began trending. “Dog Selfies” has turned what’s trending into a fun, humorous book for children. This light-hearted picture book is just one more way FarFaria is getting kids to get a kick out of reading – and for readers everywhere to have yet another laugh at the selfie craze.
