As you have likely heard, the plan passed by Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) in January is generating lots of controversy with dog owners and nature lovers alike. At a rally in early March protesting the changes, San Mateo Supervisor Adrienne J. Tissier who actively opposes the plan said, “The National Park Service has put together a new General Management Plan, which most Bay Area residents have never heard about, that radically changes the management of the GGNRA and is not in keeping with its founding principles.” Supervisor Tissier is joined by Congresswoman Jackie Speier, Assemblymember Phil Ting and the presidents of all of the local Boards of Supervisors in her opposition to these new regulations.
The plan strictly limits recreational access to vast stretches of the GGNRA that, in the past, have been open for public recreation. An activist group call Save Our Recreation is actively organizing members and politicians to protest against the passage of the plan and to bring light to the lack of collaboration offered by Director Christine Lehnertz during the creation of this next phase of our recreational future. Save Our Recreation advocates for the preservation of recreation in the GGNRA and a comprehensive process that includes public input, independent voices and thoughtful consideration. Not only does this controversy have a name, #RecreateGate; their next step may be Washington DC.
