The Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) is conducting a planning process to decide how best to manage dog walking and recreation on its lands, which range across several coastal counties and some of the most breath-taking public property in America. Now a new turn in the multi-year planning process is giving off-leash proponents a new chance to comment on the GGNRA’s proposed management plan.
In 2011, a Draft Dog Management Plan/Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) was released and comments were solicited from the public. The GGNRA’s website explains that, “Given the substance of many of the comments received,” a Supplemental EIS was required to address the public’s concerns. The Park Service has just announced that the Supplemental EIS should be ready for public review some time this month.
The revised document will incorporate new information and will present a number of new management options for consideration, including:
- Evaluating additional access for dog walking, both on leash and under voice control
- Re-evaluating the impacts to adjacent federal, city, and county parklands that could result from reducing areas open to dog walking in GGNRA
- Re-evaluating fencing as a method to minimize impacts of dog walking
The comment period will run 90 days from the date of the Supplemental Dog Management Plan/EIS release. Stay tuned to nps.gov/goga/parkmgmt/dog-management.htm for news of the release, then make your voice heard in a timely manner on behalf of off-leash canine recreation.
The Supplemental DEIS process is expected to add about a year to the project schedule. For more information or to be added to the project email list, call the Project Information Line at 415-561-4728.
Ed. Note: Again this year, many Beast of the Bay Awards voters picked beloved GGNRA sites as winners and runners-up in various categories. Check out all the contest results here.
