On April 1, the Oakland City Council took a huge step toward making Oakland more dog-friendly, officially opening many more parks to canine recreation. Dogs must be on-leash in many of these areas, but there are some great new off-leash destinations, as well.
Prior to this action, there were only a handful of fenced-in dog play areas for Oakland’s furry residents, and their people had been protesting and petitioning the City for years to improve the situation.
On its website, the Oakland Dog Owners Group, a major force in getting the job done, thanks Mayor Jean Quan and Parks & Recreation Director Audree Jones-Taylor for their work on the issue. The site also cautions dog guardians to honor the leash rules (see lists below) and to conscientiously clean up after their canine companions – or risk having the new ordinance overturned.
The new rules are effective immediately, so even if you still see those old No Dogs Allowed signs, the following parks are now dog-friendly.
Get out there with your furry playmates and celebrate this major victory!
