In early February, The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA®) launched “Henry’s Book Club,” an interactive website designed to expose young readers to literature on humane topics and increase their awareness of animal welfare.
“At least 30 million children use the Internet as a source of information,” said ASPCA President & CEO Ed Sayres. “It is our hope that through Henry’s Book Club, we will spread awareness of ASPCA award-winning books through online community outreach, while simultaneously teaching children the benefits of the human/animal bond.”
Named in honor of ASPCA founder Henry Bergh, Henry’s Book Club features award-winning books on animals and the environment. February’s selections include A Dog’s Life: The Autobiography of a Stray by Ann Martin and Buddy Unchained by Daisy Bix. Both books shine a spotlight on the millions of animals who enter shelters each year, as well as the special people who adopt them.
Two new books will be posted on the site on the first Monday of every month, one for children aged five to eight, the other for ages nine and up. For each selected title, the ASPCA will provide a brief description of the book and a list of suggested discussion questions for use by parents, teachers, scout leaders, and kids themselves. Henry’s Book Club will also host special guest authors and moderated discussion groups on humane and environmental topics for readers aged 13+.
