Pilots N Paws Plans Massive Airlift Rescue

Pilots N Paws, an online forum that connects animal rescue groups and volunteer pilots, is launching Pilots N Paws 5000, the largest pet airlift ever. From September 12 to 20, Pilots N Paws volunteers will attempt something that’s never been done — transporting 5,000 homeless animals in a single week.

The organization’s mission is reducing the euthanasia rates at shelters nationwide by transporting animals at risk to rescue groups willing and able to help find homes for them. “The goal of Pilots N Paws 5000 is to increase awareness about all the ways people can help animals in need, whether it’s by providing air transportation, becoming a foster home or general volunteering,” says Jon Wehrenberg, co-founder of Pilots N Paws.

By using the Pilots N Paws website, rescuers in high-kill areas can easily connect with shelters, rescue groups, and foster homes in areas of the country where high kill rates are not the rule. When the two parties have made their arrangements, they can locate a volunteer pilot who will provide transportation for the animal(s) in question.

Such a massive rescue effort requires a great many volunteers. You can help by:

Offering your services as a pilot.  Register online and fly at-risk pets to safety. Pilots N Paws is a 501(c)(3) organization, so pilots’ transport flight expenses relating are tax-deductible..

Becoming a foster “parent.”  Take care of pets in your home, either short- or long-term, until permanent adopters can be found.

Adopting. Consider taking one of the rescued pets into your own home on a permanent basis.

Spreading the word. Tell your local animal shelter about Pilots N Paws. If there is an airport in your community that serves small planes, ask the manager to let its pilots know about Pilots N Paws.

Donating money or other resources. Gifts to Pilots N Paws, rescue groups, and animal shelters are usually tax-deductible.

You can also make a difference in the welfare of dogs in your community by volunteering at your local shelters or rescue groups. Their need is ongoing and there are many ways to help out, from walking shelter dogs to filing paperwork.
