We asked the pet photographers featured in our September issue to give our readers a bit of advice about taking great shots of their dogs. Here are their pointers, right in time for your Halloween photo opps…
From Pat Boyd
Try having a friend do the actual shooting. Stand or crouch to the rear and side of the photographer and elicit expressions from your dog by promising a special treat or saying “Wanna go for a walk?” Your cherished voice offering good things can bring out a cute cock of the head or happy face.
From Lori Cheung
Select a location where your dog feels comfortable and lively, such as at a beautiful beach, park, or at home. Have your dog’s special treats handy during the photo shoot. Select a clean background and zoom in on your gorgeous dog. Have fun and she or he will wag with joy!
From Jesse Freidin
Try placing your companion inside a large patch of open shade – the light will be smooth and even, and you’ll avoid distracting harsh shadows. Also, wait for the right moment. Let your dog sniff your camera, get used to his surroundings, and relax before you start snapping away.
From Kendra Luck
An easy tip for making great candid photos of your dog is to get down to the dog’s level. You don’t even need to look through the viewfinder or at the monitor, just hold the camera down low, aim at your dog, and fire away – you may be pleasantly surprised!
From Mark Rogers
Setting the scene is as important as taking the shot, so don’t just show up and point your camera at your dog’s face. Get comfortable with each other, take your time, and don’t worry about missing something. And, please, edit yourself afterwards. Nobody except you wants to see 50 identical shots of your dog.
