Stamp Out Homeless Pets!

The U.S. Post Office has unveiled its social awareness campaign for 2010, Stamps to the Rescue, and previewed the new Animal Rescue: Adopt a Shelter Pet commemorative postage stamps.

The 44-cent stamps feature photos of five cats and five dogs who were adopted from a shelter in New Milford, Connecticut, hometown of veteran stamp photographer Sally Andersen-Bruce, who snapped the shots.

The public announcement was made by Ellen DeGeneres on her television show on March 17. DeGeneres and the holistic pet care company she co-owns, Halo: Purely for Pets, are promoting the stamps to raise awareness about the millions of homeless animals awaiting adoption in the nation’s animal shelters.

“This is a subject that I am extremely passionate about. By working together, we can find good homes for millions of adoptable, homeless, and abandoned pets,” DeGeneres said. “And until they get adopted, I’m happy to say that Halo and I are giving one million meals to shelter pets that are waiting for you.” For more information about the campaign, visit www.stampstotherescue.com

On April 30, Postmaster General John E. Potter will join DeGeneres for the official stamp dedication ceremony at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in Hollywood. The stamps go on sale that same day. They can be pre-ordered at https://shop.usps.com or by calling 1.800.STAMP.24 (1.800.782.6724).

Past social awareness stamps issued by the USPS have highlighted such issues as children’s health, literacy, breast cancer awareness, organ and tissue donation, philanthropy, and Alzheimer’s awareness.
