Travel Tips for Summer Adventures

With summer upon us travel abounds. In each of the articles in this Bay Woof Issue, weʼve highlighted a great way to get active and sporty with your dogs, but just like active kids, active dogs often need a ride or a longer journey to their activities! Bathing suit – check; sunscreen – check; big straw hat – check. But donʼt forget Fido and his checklist of need as well – Barking Hound Villageʼs Owner David York can help REDUCE YOUR travel stress with these eight great tips:

1. Travel on an empty stomach. Carsickness is more likely if your pet has a full stomach. If the trip is long, feed a smaller amount than normal at least two hours before you leave.

2. Make sure your pet stays hydrated. To ensure safe water on the road: carry a portable water filter, boil water from home and store it in air-tight bottles or use commercial bottled water.

3. Leave the front seat for humans. Keep your pet in the back seat of the car. If an airbag deploys while your pet is in the passenger seat (even in a crate), it might injure your pet.

4. Take your walks in the morning or evening. Midday heat can overwhelm your dog so exercise your dog during cooler hours of the day.

5. Be sure to take plenty of your dogʼs regular food. Changing your dogʼs diet can often cause an upset stomach.

6. Always be sure your dogʼs ID tag includes your cell phone number in case you get separated.

On a longer journey:

7. If you have to leave your dog alone in your hotel room, make sure to place a note on your door so
housekeeping doesnʼt accidently let them out.

8. Before you travel, make reservations. If you need to arrange overnight accommodations, make sure the pet-only rooms are also non-smoking rooms. Also, request a ground-floor room. This is convenient for late-night potty runs, and means little unnecessary schlepping for you at properties that donʼt have elevators.
