Redemption, the Myth of Pet Overpopulation and the No Kill Revolution In America
By Nathan J. Winograd (Almaden Books, 2007)
From the barnyard, to the backyard, to the bedroom. That’s how Nathan Winograd describes the shift in our collective attitude toward our companion animals since the days of our founding fathers (and mothers). Although most of us consider our pets to be family members nowadays, Winograd’s book shows that institutionalized barbarity is still lurking in our society – specifically, the needless killing of homeless animals.
Winograd, an attorney, became Director of the Ithaca, New York SPCA in 2001 and turned a virtual death camp into a shelter that saved over 93% of the animals entering its doors. Other shelters have also used this model successfully, including many in the Bay Area, demonstrating that there is a formula that actually works to save animals – essentially, involving the public in simple activities such as adoption fairs and low-cost spay and neuter clinics.
This book is likely to blow away your current (mis)conceptions about pet overpopulation, euthanasia, animal welfare institutions, and their leaders. Winograd’s spotlight exposes attitudes of complacency and greed, some of it in very high places. If you believe that the leaders of all major humane organizations would eagerly implement proven methods for ending animal suffering and death, Winograd will set you straight.
He issues a call for change that reflects our society’s growing empathy and respect for companion animals, and he does so compellingly and articulately. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in creating a more compassionate society.
