In these economically challenging times, it is worthwhile to reflect on the fact that the very best things in life are priceless, yet absolutely free: friendship, companionship, conversation, laughter, health, and happiness, to name but a few. For dog owners especially, there are so many golden moments to appreciate each day.
Dogs celebrate our mere waking with mega eagerness and exuberance for the day ahead. The moment they open their eyes and spot us, they start wagging their tails. We may awaken tired, maybe grumpy or a bit down in the dumps, then in come our canine life-coaches and cheerleaders to cheer us up. Come on, they tell us, get up and enjoy breakfast, dinner, walks, and games with me!
Dogs greet us as if they have no short-term memory whatsoever. In the morning, they seem to have forgotten that we kissed them goodnight just the evening before. When we walk in the door, they greet us as if we have been gone for months, even though we are just returning from a day at work or a short trip to do errands. They are just so excited and happy every time they see us.
Dogs have such an amazing enthusiasm and appreciation for that most precious of precious things — the moment. And they relish life to the max. One day at a time, each day and every day. Maybe we have lots to learn from our dogs. We certainly have much to enjoy together.
There is time for long dog walks, time to sit on a park bench with your dog by your side and just watch the world go by, and still time for a quick trip to the dog park on the way home. Time to surf the Web or read on the couch with your dog within hugging distance.
Enjoy lots of games with your dogs, and when they’ve worn you out, give them toys and watch them play together. Try videotaping their play and then watch the video on television. My dogs just love watching instant replays of their play sessions. You can turn on the music and dance with your dog, singing along. Improvise and take turns following each other’s lead. This, too, makes for great video.
At the end of the day, kiss your dogs goodnight and go to bed looking forward to the next day.
