In “A Christmas Story,” the neighbors (the Bumpuses) had at least 785 smelly hound dogs.
The first dog balloon in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade was Frieda the Dachshund in 1950. At 21-feet tall and 53-feet long, Frieda may just be the world’s largest dachshund. Underdog was introduced in 1965 and Aviator Snoopy was introduced in 1968 (there have been seven Snoopy versions in the parade over the years).
The following Hanukkah items can be harmful to dogs: latkes, dreidels, menorahs, chocolate coins, and sufganiyot (doughnuts).
Bamse was a St. Bernard that served on a Norwegian minesweeper during World War II. Although his name means “cuddly bear” in Norwegian, he was tough. He helped drunken sailors make it back to their posts and even broke up a bar fight once. Every Christmas, he was dressed in a sailor’s hat so that his photo could be put on Christmas cards and sent to the crew mates’ relatives.
The following Christmas items can be poisonous to dogs: poinsettias, mistletoe, holly, egg nog with alcohol, chocolate, macadamia nuts, turkey, Christmas cactuses, and Christmas trees.
