Mr. Smarty Pants Knows

Dogs usually don’t look directly into the eyes of other canines because this sends a threatening message. But they have learned it’s okay to look directly into human eyes.

Doberman Pinschers were developed around 1890 by Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann, a tax collector in Apolda, Germany who worked in a dangerous area and needed a tough, smart, and reliable protection dog. There are other Pinscher breeds, including the Miniature Pinscher, Wire-Haired Pinscher (Schnauzer), and German Pinscher. “Pinscher” simply means terrier.

Dogs not only tilt their heads to show uncertainty or confusion, they also wrinkle their foreheads.

Rottweillers are named after Rotweil, the oldest town in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg near the Black Forest in southwest Germany. The town was founded by the Romans in 73 AD. The dogs were used to pull butcher carts and herd cattle and were originally known as Rotweil butcher dogs.

Margaret Hays’ Pomeranian, Elizabeth Rothschild’s Pomeranian, and Henry and Myra Harper’s Pekingese were the only three dogs to be rescued from the RMS Titanic before it sank in 1912.
