Mr. Smarty Pants KNOWS, July 2014

The term “Bulldog” was first mentioned around 1500.

Puggy the Dog of Fort Worth Texas is recognized by Guinness World Records as having the longest tongue for a dog. A male Pekingese owned by Becky Stanford, his tongue measures 4.5 inches. He has his own Facebook page.

Dachshunds were bred to battle badgers; the name in German means “badger dog”.

The Dogpatch section of San Francisco may have been so-named because packs of dogs used to scavenge discarded meat there from Butchertown, a slaughterhouse district located in Bayview. Or it may be from Al Capp’s comic strip, Li’l Abner, in which Dogpatch was used to describe a town in the middle of nowhere. Or it may be because dogfennel used to grow there.

Artists Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, and Lucas Cranach the Elder all featured Schnauzers in their work.

The above is information that Mr. Smarty Pants read in a book, magazine, newspaper, or website; heard on the radio; saw on television; or overheard at a party. Got any facts?
