The Keeshond was originally called “Wolf Spitz” because it had a small body and curved tail and a wolf-like appearance. The name Keeshond came for Cornelis (Kees) de Gyselaer who helped develop the breed. It was known as the “Dutch Barge Dog” in England until 1926 because it worked as a watch and guard dog on riverboats, barges and on farms.
According to the American Kennel Club, the most popular breed of dog in San Francisco is the Labrador Retriever. The second most popular breed is the French Bulldog.
The late Sen. Ted Kennedy loved the book, Lad, A Dog, a 1919 American novel written by Albert Payson Terhune. Comprised of 12 short stories, the novel is based on the life of Terhune’s real-life rough collie, Lad. The book was made into a 1962 B-movie.
