The Peninsula Humane Society and SPCA in Burlingame, CA is offering DNA testing to potential dog owners who want to know a dog’s breed. Tested dogs are being placed in homes twice as fast as before the shelter began the program.

One way to tell Belgian Shepherd dogs apart is by their hair. The Groenendael has a long, straight black coat. The Tervuren has a long, straight brownish coat that darkens at the tips. The Malinois has a short black and tan coat. And the Laekenous has a fawn colored, wiry coat. In Belgium, they are considered one breed but in the United States, they are separate breeds.
