Help save dogs!

Please remember to support shelters and rescue groups in the New Year. As the national economy stagnates, these not-for-profit organizations will depend more and more on monetary gifts, volunteer services, and donated supplies more than ever. When you help such groups, you are making a tremendous difference in the lives of animals in our communities. If you are able, please offer regular support to your favorite canine organizations in 2009.

New Canine Joint Replacement

A canine arthritis sufferer named Jake was fitted with a cutting-edge elbow prosthesis in April, and the success of his surgery could transform orthopedic veterinary care.

After speaking with surgeon Loic Dejardin of Michigan State University about the advantages of cementless prostheses, including reduced risk of infection and reduced rate of implant wear, Jake’s owners were willing to try the new procedure. They say that Jake underwent intensive post-op rehab and is acting like his young self again.

Some medical experts believe that the new device has the potential to transform human joint replacement, as well.

Closed Racetracks, homeless Greyhounds

Hundreds of greyhound dogs are left without homes as race tracks in states across the country shut down. Recently, Massachusetts voted to ban greyhound racing, and its two tracks are required to close by January 1, 2010. In addition, current economic struggles and stiff competition from other gambling venues have caused tracks to close in Kansas City, Denver, Tampa, and Wichita, among other cities. While this is positive news for dog-racing foes, it has put a tremendous strain on adoption agencies trying to find good homes for so many greyhounds.  “You Buy, We Save Lives”

Fifty percent of the profits from a new pet product line from HeathyPets, Inc. will benefit the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation (NDSDF). IronDog brand chewable tablets and soft chews are designed to support healthy joints and connective tissues in dogs. Th company initiative, “You Buy, We Save Lives,” will help the NDSDF train additional search-and-rescue dog teams dedicated to finding people buried alive in the aftermath of disasters. With only half the need for search dogs currently filled, this could prove to be an important source of funding for keeping NDSDF adequately prepared for future events.
