“Death Cap” alert
Local veterinarians are sounding the alarm about Amanita phalloides, a poisonous mushroom also called the “death cap,” that has sprung up in abundance in the Bay Area since the rains begin a few weeks ago. It has a honey-like odor that attracts some dogs. The poison can take up to several hours to manifest symptoms. Early treatmentis crucial, so if you suspect your dogs have eaten wild mushrooms of any kind, immediately take them to an emergency clinic for evaluation and treatment. To prevent potentially lethal poisoning, regularly patrol your yard and other outdoor areas where canines congregate, especially after a rain, plucking and destroying any mushrooms you find.
Milo Update
The Milo Foundation, a veteran Bay Area animal rescue organization, reopened its adoption center in San Rafael in late November. It was closed in mid-October due to reported violations of Milo’s use permit, including poor sanitation and an overflow of animals on the premises. Milo founder Lynne Tingle attributed these conditions to the vast number of Bay Area dogs in need. After a six-week investigation, Milo was allowed to open again under a six-month permit that limits the number of dogs Milo can house at the facility to 10. Unannounced inspections by will take place to make sure the conditions of the permit are being met.
