Dublin Dog Park Features Found-Object Art

To the delight of many East Bay canines and their humans, the City of Dublin’s first dog park was unveiled in mid-May. It adjoins Dougherty Hills Park in Dublin, along Stagecoach Road and Amador Valley Blvd. The park is open daily from 7:30 AM until dusk.

Canine visitors have lots of options for off-leash play, including a seesaw, an obstacle course, and enough space to chase down a speeding tennis ball. There are separate play areas for large and small breeds. Human companions will especially enjoy the artwork of Michele Alcantara, a Prunedale artist whose whimsical sculptures will be installed in late June. Her work for the park includes dogs, fire hydrants, toy containers, bones, etc. – all fabricated from metal.

Alcantara has used recycled materials in her sculptures for years. She searches junk yards, garage sales, and stuff dumped at the sides of roads for objects of different sizes, shapes, and finishes to inspire her art. Sometimes these found objects are so beautiful, she simply puts them on display in her studio. The artist also collects any waste created in the sculpting process, like metal dust from grinding, to use in future works.

Though Dougherty Hills dog park facilities  have been available to the public for weeks, the official opening celebration is scheduled for July 28. Be sure to make the scene with your favorite companions, especially the furry variety.
