Refuge for Homeless People and Pets
Petco Place, a new shelter in Hollywood, CA that provides a safe landing place for homeless people and their pets, has opened its doors. “Up until now, people on the street with animals have not had a place to go,” said Pamela Magette, executive director of Pets Are Wonderful Support/Los Angeles. “They will not avail themselves of emergency shelters if they cannot take their pets.” Both people and pets can stay at Petco Place at as long as they need to while they try to get back on their feet and find permanent housing. The National Coalition for the Homeless estimates that 5 to 10 percent of homeless people have pets. Puppy Mill Indictment In late August, an indictment was handed down in the case of a massive puppy mill busted earlier in the summer. The 700-dog operation was charged with 24 felony counts of aggravated animal cruelty and several misdemeanors. Arraignment is scheduled for September. The massive raid was led by the Humane Society of the U.S. and assisted by the Mobile Animal CSI Unit of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to animals. Team members found hundreds of dogs in filthy conditions, lacking adequate food and water, and many had untreated illnesses and injuries, including broken limbs. Other neglected animals seized from the property included horses, burros, miniature horses, chickens, goats, parrots, and purebred cats.

Knoller Conviction Reinstated
Marjorie Knoller, whose 140- pound Presa Canarios attacked and killed Diane Whipple in a San Francisco apartment building hallway in 2001, was convicted of manslaughter after a high-profile trial and sentenced to serve four years in prison. She was paroled in January 2004. But on August 23, a San Francisco judge reinstated a seconddegree murder conviction that had been reduced to manslaughter and ordered Knoller jailed while awaiting sentencing. She faces 15 years to life. Her lawyer, Dennis Riordan, stated that he was planning to appeal the ruling in both state and federal court. A jury handed down the murder conviction, but the charge was reduced to manslaughter because a Superior Court judge believed Knoller’s testimony that she did not know the dogs were capable of killing. Now Superior Court Judge Charlotte Woolard has reinstated the jury’s conviction, stating that Knoller “knew her conduct endangered life” and thus was guilty of murder. Knoller and her husband had witnessed the massive dogs being aggressive toward other dogs and people on multiple occasions before the fatal attack and had been warned by a veterinarian that the dogs were untrained and thus “a liability in any household.”
