“War Dogs” DVD
Bay Woof readers whose interests include war history in addition to dogs will be interested in a film just released on DVD. “War Dogs of the Pacific” tells the story of the Marines’ war dog platoons during World War II. Soldiers and their canine partners performed many dangerous missions and saved countless lives. Fight Convictions
As reported in a previous issue, the nation’s largest multi-agency crackdown on a dogfighting ring occurred this past July. Federal agents seized hundreds of dogs and arrested 26 people in a raid that spanned seven states. On September 14, four of the Missouri perpetrators pleaded guilty to breeding, trafficking, fighting and killing American Pit Bull Terriers as part of a massive dogfighting operation. Charges against other participants are still pending.
The Origin of Dogs
A team of scientists recently released the results of its genetic study of dogs from all over the world, published in the journal “Molecular Biology and Evolution.” The geneticists found that all dogs appear to descend from an ancient wolf lineage in southern China. The researchers surmise that wolves began scavenging human garbage dumps. As they became tamer, they were captured and bred, probably as food. Archeological evidence indicates that dog meat was consumed in ancient China.
