Fake Fur Labeling
On August 11, the state Senate passed AB1656, which if signed into law would require manufacturers to label all animal fur used in their garments. The bill had already been passed by the Assembly and now awaits the signature of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for final approval. He has not yet taken a position on the bill.
Fur labeling is already mandated by Federal law, but only for garments valued over $150. Supporters of AB1656 say shoppers should know in every case whether a garment they consider purchasing contains the fur of real animals.
Ted Lieu, D-Torrance and Fiona Ma, D-San Francisco are the bill’s authors. The legislation was sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States.
“There is an assumption out there that if a garment isn’t labeled it must be fake… and this isn’t always the case,” Ma said in a statement. “People have a right to know if they are buying dog fur or a polyester blend.”

The San Francisco Community Clinic Consortium’s VET SOS Project has received the 2010 Meritorious Service Award from the California Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA). Spay/Neuter License Plate
California residents can now order a vehicle license plate that raises public awareness about the importance of “fixing” pets while raising funds for subsidized and low-cost spay-neuter programs across the state.
The California Veterinary Medical Board spearheaded the effort to create the special plate. Actor Pierce Brosnan donated a piece of original artwork for it, which features his family pets, Shilo (the dog) and Angel Baby (the cat that clings to Shilos’s head). He and wife Keely Brosnan have long been high-profile animal advocates.
Fees are $98 for a personalized plate and $50 for random letters and numbers, on top of the usual DMV fees. To order online, visit www.caspayplate.com.
