Weʼre Rocket Dog Rescue! Youʼve probably seen us at one of our mobile adoption events.
Our volunteers hit the streets of the Bay Area several times each week, searching for and finding wonderful homes for loving companion animals, the vast majority of whom were recently running out of time at a shelter somewhere in California.
Our mission is obvious – to ensure that all companion animals have loving, permanent homes. And we do mean ALL. The three-legged Lab with cancer and the elderly, blind Min Pin are just as deserving as the adorable, healthy puppies.
Weʼve been pretty successful, too. Since our founding just 13 years ago, weʼve rescued and rehomed nearly 7,000 dogs. Not too shabby for an entirely volunteer-based organization that survives on a shoestring budget, comprised solely of donations from our generous supporters.
Now weʼve taken the next step. Itʼs a big one – REALLY big – but itʼs one we had to take to achieve our goals. We just recently opened our Urban Sanctuary and Adoption Center in East Oakland. Weʼll still be doing our mobile adoption events, of course, but now we have a permanent base of operations. Itʼs more than that, though – so much more.
Until now, weʼve had to rely entirely on our dedicated foster homes to safely house our fragile, often broken, adult dogs and pups. Our foster families have always come through for us with flying colors. We would have been dead in the water without them. Now, though, we have a place to safely house urgent cases when we canʼt immediately find foster homes for them. We can also take in animals who require specialized medical care before they can move to foster or permanent homes. The Sanctuary allows us to significantly increase the number of animals we save each year.
The Sanctuary opens other doors for us too. As we grow, we are already becoming a vital community resource and have gotten a warm reception from our neighbors. We frequently pull dogs out of traffic and help support community members seeking veterinary care and other necessities. We will soon be holding training classes and providing additional animal welfare services and education to our underserved East Oakland community.
Through the Sanctuary, Rocket Dog will be able to provide low-cost vaccinations, mobile spay and neuter procedures, and classes that promote responsible pet care and animal welfare. The Sanctuary will also allow us to house pets of domestic violence survivors until they are able to care for them again. This service is virtually non-existent in many cities and can mean the difference between someone choosing to leave a dangerous living situation or to remain there. All in all, itʼs a pretty amazing opportunity for Rocket Dog and the animals we serve.
“We are thrilled to have this incredible opportunity to help more animals and people in need,” said Pali Boucher, founder of Rocket Dog Rescue. “We get to spread our wings and help a new community in a new area, while continuing our tireless rescue and adoption efforts all over the Bay Area. The most exciting thing is that this will allow us to save more dogsʼ lives, which is what
we are all about!” Because we operate on the generosity of our dedicated volunteers, we could always use your help. Schedule a time to come by and lend a hand and your heart. Whether you can throw a ball, hug a pup, sling a mop, provide some gentle touch for one of our elder residents, or do data entry – we need you!
We also need donations of blankets, towels, dog crates, leashes, and other washable dog items. To give a monetary donation or meet some of our adoptable canines please visit our website at rocketdogrescue.org.
And please spread the word. Together we can make a huge difference in the lives of dogs!
