Lily’s Legacy Senior Dog Sanctuary was established in 2009 by Alice Mayn, our founder and executive director. Her inspiration came from the love of a stray dog named Lily. Our goal is to provide forever homes for abandoned, homeless, or displaced large senior dogs. Located on five acres in rural Petaluma, we offer potential adopters the homelike setting to meet and greet a new family addition. Each dog is tested for temperament and social ability to ensure a successful adoption.
With the help from a team of fabulous volunteers, Lily’s is able to give each dog individual time and attention seven days a week. The team-members’ dedication and commitment to these dogs is overwhelmingly positive. New volunteers are welcome to join the team. The No. 1 rule at Lily’s is “your ego gets checked at the door.”
Volunteers Welcome!
Lily’s Legacy conducts monthly orientations. At that time, potential volunteers are given a tour of the property. They meet all the senior dogs, and are introduced to the daily routine. The next step is to shadow one of the more experienced volunteers for two hours a week for a total of four weeks. At the end of the four-weeks training period, new volunteers are assigned a time slot that works for their schedule and benefits the sanctuary. We have truly been blessed with the most dedicated and committed group of happy people. Team Lily’s welcomes new volunteers.
On any given day, volunteers walk, bathe, brush, feed, and nurture the
dogs. Socialization is imperative for future re-homing. Volunteers spend hours cuddling with, reading to, and walking our dogs.
Our Dogs:
Once a dog is accepted to Lily’s, the first step is getting a full health exam by our fabulous team of veterinary professionals at Fairfax Veterinary Clinic. Fairfax staff provides Lily’s dogs with excellent care, comfort, and compassion.
Two recently surrendered dogs, named Barkley and Tasha, are both up for adoption. Barkley, an 8-9-year-old Shepherd/Dane mix, was a stray rescued from a Bay Area shelter. He had been severely neglected. Due to a drastic skin allergy, most likely a flea infestation, he was slated for euthanasia. He was pulled from the shelter by one of our caring volunteers. He has received exceptional care from the Fairfax Veterinary Clinic and is transforming into a happy boy. He may not win a beauty contest, but personality-wise, he’s a 10.
Tasha came to Lily’s heartworm-positive. The dedicated staff at the clinic successfully treated her life-threatening condition. She is recovering nicely at the sanctuary, and has an adoption pending. Tasha’s remarkable resilience is an inspiration to all.
A wonderful adoption story happened just last month. A couple came to adopt 11-year-old Leah, a sweet yellow Lab, rescued from a local shelter. When they saw how bonded she was with her 13-year-old roommate, Chelsey, they adopted them both.
Elsa, our beautiful German Shepherd, came to us with a malignant mammary tumor. Surgery disclosed this sweet dog had an aggressive form of cancer. Elsa will remain at Lily’s for the duration of her life. She will receive hospice care and be surrounded by people who love her.
Seasonal Fundraising:
This Christmas we are making luminaries. For a $20 donation, your pet’s photo will be put on a luminaria and lit at our December Christmas party. This is a wonderful way to honor a living pet or pay tribute to one who has passed. Simply email a photo of your pet to Lilyslegacysds@gmail.com. A check can be sent to Lily’s Legacy, P.O.Box 751002, Petaluma, Calif. 94975. Be sure to write the name of your pet in the memo section of your check. If easier, you can mail a nonreturnable photo of your pet along with your check. If paying by Mastercard, Visa or Paypal, please visit the donation page of our website: www.lilyslegacy.org.
Lily’s runs solely on donations, and we welcome your contributions. Fundraisers are held periodically throughout the year, and in the summer we hold live music events. Come visit us in Petaluma.
