Furry Friends Rescue Saves Sammy, a Bionic Dog

Furry Friends Rescue’s (FFR) “Miracle Club” transforms the lives of the neediest animals that we rescue from many animal shelters.  We rely solely upon our super great volunteer foster homes and donations.  We have no office or shelter. Instead, dogs come to us and we provide foster homes and medical interventions that prepare dogs for adoption.

Super foster home, Mike and Alan, have been fostering many of our seniors and special medical needy dogs for years. Their dedication and compassion goes above and beyond when caring for foster dogs and all their help with Furry Friends Rescue. They love these special dogs as their own dog and it truly shows.

Each dog had special needs, requiring extra TLC, special food, medication and many appointments with the vet and various specialists. On top of all this, Mike and Alan have also generously donated a great deal of money to help pay for many of those vet visits and medication.
Their last foster, a sanctuary dog named Lady, was a severely neglected senior Labrador Retriever/Irish Setter mix with many medical needs, lived to the ripe old age of 15 1/2 years old.  Mike and Alan helped nurse Lady back to health and cared for her as a cherished family member in their home.  They loved her.

Now, it’s Sammy’s turn. Sammy is a pointer/pitbull mix we took in as a 6-month-old puppy. On the day Furry Friends took him in, he lost use of both his rear legs at our vet office.  He needed double rear leg tibia crest surgery with an orthopedic specialist. Despite months passing since his operation, Sammy was on a long road to recovery. His foster home frequently takes him to many check-ups with the vet and help him get around with a sling or wheelchair for slow walks and potty breaks.

After months of healing, Sammy started walking, but within weeks, he faced another setback.  He began limping again and eventually lost use of both his rear legs. Mike and Alan rushed him back to our vet who diagnosed him with double luxating patellas.  Again, Sammy had to undergo another surgery with the orthopedic specialist on his right leg.

After weeks of recovery—being carried and walked with a sling—he is now finally able to stand and walk. Soon, he will have his left luxating patella surgery and be one step closer to living life to the fullest.  Sammy’s rehabilitation for his rear legs would not have been possible without Mike and Alan’s phenomenal care and dedication as foster parents. Their dedication is helping Sammy walk again, one day and one step at a time.

At this point, Sammy’s vet bills have exceeded $10,000 but the end result to come is truly priceless. He is our “Bionic Dog.”  We’ve help to rebuild his rear legs, so he can run and play again and live the life he was meant to live. Sammy is a sweetie! His new leash on life is so much thanks for Mike and Alan and their superstar care.

Furry Friends Rescue (FFR) is an all-volunteer non-profit 501(c)(3) companion Animal Rescue organization for Northern California.  Since Nov. 1998, we have been successful in saving more than 14,000 abandoned dogs and cats of all ages (babies to seniors/sanctuary), all breed types, and various special medical/behavior needs from over-crowded animal shelters.  We have no shelter or office.  We have an excellent reputation and relationship with all Northern California animal shelters for our quality care, experience, responsibility, and proactive rescue work.  Every special dog, puppy, cat, or kitten we rescue are vet examed, vaccinated, spayed and neutered, all vet medical needs, bathed/groomed and then home fostered by volunteers (about 80 dedicated foster homes), until they are healthy and adopted to their forever matched home.  We home foster about 100 dogs, pups, kittens and cats year round, and save about 1,000 lives per year.  Most need basic vet care from neglect, while some require expensive specialist vet care or surgery (from severe neglect/abuse).   Some seniors and terminal ill dogs & cats, live out their life with love & TLC in Sanctuary Foster Homes.   We care for our rescue dogs & cats like our own pets. Please see our “Purple Heart Miracle Club” page on our website for posting of some of our dogs & cats.
