ABOUT THE COVER: Sasha, affectionately nicknamed Squishy, is a 13-year-old Shepherd mix adopted seven years ago from the shelter run by Sacramento Animal Care and Regulation. Before the shelter’s recent renovation, its kennel area looked like a dungeon – a far cry from the great outdoors that Squishy now gets to explore. Her arthritis does not stop her from roaming beaches and trails all around California. Here she is pictured gazing over the Mendocino coastline during a visit to Glass Beach. Although she has lived in Sacramento, Santa Cruz, and Daly City, this traveling dog currently calls San Francisco home.
