Mark Twain said the most notable thing about the San Francisco summer, being the “coldest winter he ever spent” and all … but really, we locals like it that way. We get to wear layers and carry them with us wherever we go, all summer long. How can you beat that? Good thing dog “clothing” is all the rage, or else your pooch would have to be unfashionably naked if he lived in warmer parts of the world.

Summer brings time to plan. Hurricane Katrina and the resulting man-made disasters that followed took many lives, both human and animal. Thankfully, lessons have been learned and steps to implement rescue operations for potentially wounded and displaced animals in the face of a disaster are being taught by the good folks at San Francisco Animal Care and Control’s DART (Disaster Animal Response Team). While the summer sun tempts us to ditch work, the people we’ve elected to state office consider laws that could affect humans and animals alike. Virginia Handley of Paw PAC – a nonpartisan, volunteer, nonprofit political-action committee that follows the status of humane legislation in process – gives her report on the recent rumblings by the legislators.
