WAG: From the Publisher's Desk

Mark Twain said the most notable thing about the San Francisco summer, being the “coldest winter he ever spent” and all … but really, we locals like it that way.  We get to wear layers and carry them with us wherever we go, all summer long. How can you beat that? Good thing dog “clothing” is all the rage, or else your pooch would have to be unfashionably naked if he lived in warmer parts of the world.

With this first issue of the summer, we’ve got great reading for your pool-side shivering.  Our summer feature, compiled by editor Mindy Toomay, “Sunshine + Canine = Big Summer Fun” is a collection from Bay Woof friends about their favorite summer, dog-human, Bay Area activities. See the collection of summer snaps on the center spread for inspiration to simultaneously jaunt and lie about.

Summer brings time to plan. Hurricane Katrina and the resulting man-made disasters that followed took many lives, both human and animal. Thankfully, lessons have been learned and steps to implement rescue operations for potentially wounded and displaced animals in the face of a disaster are being taught by the good folks at San Francisco Animal Care and Control’s DART (Disaster Animal Response Team). Margaret Cliver attend a series of classes aimed at training volunteers for disaster relief in case/when The Big One hits — see her informative piece here for her take on the animal rescue day of the training and make Fifi a disaster kit!

While the summer sun tempts us to ditch work, the people we’ve elected to state office consider laws that could affect humans and animals alike. Virginia Handley of Paw PAC – a nonpartisan, volunteer, nonprofit political-action committee that follows the status of humane legislation in process – gives her report on the recent rumblings by the legislators. See her news here.

You may be foot loose and fancy free in the summertime, but don’t forget about all the hazardous materials that would fascinate the four-legged member of your family while you’re off at the ball park.  Dr. Sara Hughes of San Francisco Vet Specialists reports on the Top Poisons Plaguing City Dogs. Read it then go lock up your cabinets.

Good Dog! discusses whether or not to travel with your pet, Ask Dr. Dog is all about preventing canine injuries in active hounds, and Kelly Gorman-Dunbar rocks The Monthly Woof .  Along with Shelter Zone from Hopalong Animal Rescue, Nose for News, and the Calendar of dog-related Events, this June issue is chock-full-o-reading-goodness for your pool side toe-dipping.  Just remember to bring your jacket.
